1. What does Buildots need before setting up the digital twin?
Before setup starts, Buildots checks that the model, schedule, and drawings are all available, current, and in a usable format.

2. What types of models are supported?
Buildots works with Revit, IFC, 3D DWG, and Navisworks
The models should:
Be construction-ready (not just design intent)
Include LOD 300 level of detail
Accurately show the final location, quantity, and orientation of elements
Include key parameters so elements can be linked to scheduled tasks.

3. What are 2D drawings used for?
2D drawings do not replace the BIM model. They’re used during setup to help define tracking areas and clarify finishes — but they’re not available in the Buildots platform itself.
Buildots uses:
• Room-named floor plans (mandatory)
• Wall, floor, and ceiling finish plans
• Door schedules and finish schedules (if available)

4. How does Buildots create the digital twin?
Buildots uses your approved model and schedule to:
Convert the model into a structured database
Define project structure- buildings, levels, segments and areas
Group model elements into Element Types based on properties
Link Element Types to scheduled activities and tracking logic

5. What is a segment, and how is it different from an area?
Areas = the smallest spatial units used to track work progress. Each area represents a real location on site where a trade performs a specific task — for example, an apartment unit, a corridor, or a technical room.
Segments = groups of areas that share the same planned activity sequence and trade dependencies. They reflect how work is actually carried out on-site — grouping areas that are built together.
This structure allows the system to mirror real-world site flow and generate more accurate insights.

6. What is an Element Type, and why does it matter?
An Element Type is a group of model elements that represent a specific type of construction installation — like fresh air duct or sink tap. Each Element Type is linked to an activity in the system, which is what Buildots tracks on site.
These groupings are based on a mix of properties like model category, type name, system classification, and geometry — and they’re key to making sure each activity reflects what’s actually happening on site.

7. Can Buildots track every type of activity?
Not every activity can be tracked visually. Some — like inspections, testing, or a second coat of paint — don’t leave a visible change that can be confirmed in a 360° video. For example, you can’t tell from the footage whether the wall has one or two layers of paint.
Those activities may be marked as Self-Tracked — which means the site team manually updates them. Buildots tracks most visible activities automatically using 360° captures and model logic.
8. How are models updated during the project?
Buildots checks for model updates regularly:
If connected to the client’s CDE, updates are reviewed every 3 weeks
If files are shared manually, updates happen on request
Updates go through a two-step process:
BIM experts check, convert, and prepare the files
System experts review the changes and apply updates carefully, pausing if anything risks breaking tracking logic
9. How do Buildots ensure quality over time?
Buildots runs ongoing quality checks throughout the project. These include:
Verifying that new files include all required data and structure
Running automated checks on model content, activity links, and tracking logic
Flagging any issues that require input from the client
This helps keep the system stable, accurate, and aligned with real site progress — even as things change.
10. What should I do if something doesn’t look right in my digital twin?
You can either:
Submit a support ticket directly through the Buildots system (Direct Support), or
Contact your Buildots CSM or Construction Solution Manager to request a change. They’ll handle the request on your behalf and make sure it gets implemented.
11. Can users make changes in the system themselves?
Yes. Users with editing permissions can rename trades and activities directly in the Configuration Center to match on-site terminology. Additional configuration options will gradually be added in future
